Siskiyou Economic Development Council Secures $2.1 Million to Complete Carnegie Rehabilitation Project and Drive Industry Innovation

[Yreka, CA, May 26, 2023] - The Siskiyou Economic Development Council (SEDC) will receive $2.1 million from the Community Economic Resilience Fund (CERF) Pilot Program. Several California agencies issued a press release this week, announcing nearly $40 million in state funding supporting eight economic development projects across the state. One of the projects selected for funding will be located in Yreka, California to help support industry innovation and community resiliency in the northern region of the state.

The Siskiyou County project will support innovation in the region’s working landscape sectors, with a special focus on the completion of the Yreka Carnegie Rehabilitation Project to serve as a place-based anchor for the emerging work. The SEDC will carefully rehabilitate Yreka’s Carnegie building and lead an adaptive reuse plan to support the region’s working landscape sectors including agriculture, outdoor tourism, and timber. This funding will support a $5 million dollar investment to create a dynamic business and industry innovation hub, foster collaboration, and develop climate resiliency practices, ultimately benefiting our community and its residents.

"The CERF Pilot announcement this week will play a vital role in the future of California. This award demonstrates the importance of our rural economies and our work to support a resilient, working landscape,” explains Tonya Dowse, Executive Director of the Siskiyou Economic Development Council. "We are grateful to the three state agencies for recognizing the potential of the North State CERF region among the eight important projects, and for investing in our economic future,” said Dowse.

The CERF program is administered by the Governor's Office of Planning and Research, the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), and the Labor & Workforce Development Agency. The Carnegie adaptive reuse plan has received broad support including a USDA RISE award, selection for the Community Economic Resilience Fund (CERF) Pilot Program, and recognition in Yreka’s Recreation Economy for Rural Communities Action Plan (US EPA).
