Siskiyou Climate Collaborative Program Awarded $1.5 Million from California Strategic Growth Council

The collaborative will focus on building the resiliency of Siskiyou’s working landscape, as we face wildfires, drought, and other extreme climate events.

YREKA, Calif., Dec. 16, 2022 - The California Strategic Growth Council voted yesterday to approve over $8.5 million in grant funding for the Regional Climate Collaboratives Round 1 Awards. The Siskiyou Climate Collaborative Program (Collaborative) placed second and will receive $1.5 million to aid in the development and implementation of a Climate Resiliency Plan in Siskiyou County, located on California’s northern border.

The Regional Climate Collaborative (RCC) Program is a brand-new grant program through the Strategic Growth Council that provides funding for under-resourced communities in California. The program allows communities to build relationships and develop processes, plans and projects that drive and sustain climate action.

“For Siskiyou to be recognized amongst our larger counterparts is a major accomplishment for our community,” said Tonya Dowse, Executive Director at Siskiyou Economic Development Council. “With this grant, our county has an opportunity to prioritize climate resiliency and make proactive investments in our rural communities.”

The Siskiyou Climate Collaborative includes the Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District, the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension, the Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance, Siskiyou County SMART Workforce Center, and the Siskiyou Economic Development Council. The Karuk Tribe participated in designing the stakeholder structure and intends to join following project kick-off. Collaborative partner Nathan Johnston will serve as the lead facilitator through the duration of the program.

Each partner in the Collaborative, along with other stakeholders and community members, will play a vital role in building the Climate Resiliency Plan and help create informed strategies around the climate challenges affecting Siskiyou County.
